Lymphedema is a chronic disease that affects the lymphatic system. It is characterized by abnormal accumulation of a protein-rich fluid called lymph in the body, leading to swelling, decreased mobility, tenderness, and pain in the affected area. It currently has no known cure, and millions of people all over the world are affected, and I am one of them.
I was diagnosed with a unique mix of primary and secondary lymphedema in my right leg in my 20’s. When I was told that it had no cure and I am stuck with this condition forever, I could not believe it. I felt overwhelmed by anger, sadness and I had a whole lot of questions.
“Is there really no cure?”
“Does that mean there’s nothing
I could do about it?”
I held on to that second question so desperately, and I must admit that I have gone about answering it through the wrong means. I was depressed, extremely angry and was mournful. I was an athlete and I had my whole life ahead of me, and I could not believe that this condition took these all away from me because of a chain of events that I had no control over. I tried to mask the pain by not taking care of myself, drinking and having bad relationships. My leg blew up to a stage 3 to stage 4 at my worst.
One day, I took a long hard look at myself and asked the second question again.
“Does that mean there’s nothing
I could do about it?”
As I looked at myself, I thought about the things that I have read and the stories that I have heard about lymphedema. I thought about my two beautiful sons who love me and need me. I thought about my family and friends who are rooting for me. I thought to myself, “It’s time I got up, dust myself off, equip myself and walk this lymphedema journey.”
The Amanda that you see right now is a product of trial and error. All those hardships inspired me to push on and inspired me to help others like myself. All the years of studying for certifications, learning from personal experiences and learning from therapists, doctors and my fellow lymphedema warriors have brought me here.
I know how hard it is to be alone in learning what works and what doesn’t, and so I made it my personal mission to bring my proven and tested techniques, guidance, love and compassion to those suffering from lymphedema, lipedema or lipolymphedema.
